“How`s the world treating you?”
By, Allen Delk
"How's the world treating you?" While the question might be one from which some performing artists would run, musician Carl Jackson embraces it. The world is treating him quite well. Jackson added yet another honor to his already long list of accomplishments as he and other outstanding Mississippi musicians were inducted into the Mississippi Musicians Hall of Fame (www.ms.music.org). Jackson was so honored in the Country Bluegrass category during the October 7-15 event, “Mississippi Celebrates the Birthplace of American Music." A multiple Grammy award winner, Jackson was born in Louisville, Mississippi in 1953. At 14, Jackson found himself on the stage of the Grand Ole Opry with bluegrass greats Jim & Jesse.
At 19, Jackson was hired by Glen Campbell who featured Jackson as "the greatest banjo player in the world" for 12 years. Not limiting himself to being an incredible instrumentalist, Jackson tapped into his vocal and songwriting abilities, recording two albums for Capitol Records and three for Sugar Hill. In 1984 Jackson's signing with Columbia Records produced the top 40 country songs, 'She's Gone, Gone, Gone," and "Dixie Train." Jackson can be heard as a vocalist on an all-star line up of albums with the likes of Emmylou Harris, Ricky Skaggs and Dolly Parton to name a very few. From the 1990 International Bluegrass Music Association Song of the Year award for "Little Mountain Church House," to a 2005 Dove Award Nominee for bluegrass Song of the Year for a recent version of the same song by George Hamilton, Jackson's career has been unstoppable. Add to an already impressive list of awards the 2003 Grammy winner for Country Album of the Year - Livin’, Lovin’, Losin’- Songs Of The Louvin Brothers - produced by Jackson. On the album is the song--you got it--"How's the World Treating You," a breath-taking duet from the album featuring James Taylor and Alison Krauss. All and all, Jackson has had 100`s of his songs recorded with sales in excess of 40 million. A recent poll by Bluegrass Unlimited Magazine found Jackson to have written 8 of the top 200 bluegrass songs of all time. It is not surprising that the city of Louisville gave her native son a City Proclamation during the induction ceremony.
The 1000+ individuals who attended the weekend celebration at the Vicksburg's Convention Center were entertained by an outstanding lineup of musical genres including "The Willie Dixon Wang Dang Doodle Blues Festival, and both a Country Music Review and a Gospel Music Review. Jackson headlined the Country Music concert during which he graciously paid homage to his parents. Their influence, and the influence and help of close friends like Jim Weatherly (www.jimweatherly.com) and Marty Gamblin made being in the business of performing arts not only bearable, but a blast. During his performance, Jackson shared his "Letter to Home," with an elated audience. Jackson's instrumental solo and his song "C. F. Martin & Me" were received with thunderous applause, as did the number Jackson dedicated to his friends. Jackson also performed a song called “In His Hands," during which Jackson spoke about putting faith in God, which was equally well- received.

Jackson's "Home for Christmas" annual concert will be held at the Strand Theatre in Louisville, Mississippi on December 9. Jackson will be sharing the stage with Johnny Rawls,Valerie Storey, Larry Cordle, Jerry Salley, Columbus, Mississippi prodigy Ruby Jane Smith, and from Starkville, Mississippi The Larry Wallace Band, Tickets for resevered seating at either the 5 p.m. show or the 8 p.m. show are on sale now through the Louisville-Winston County Chamber of Commerce. 662-773-3921
